Food Porn: My Guilty Pleasure

I don’t seem able to walk out of a bookstore or a grocery store without buying at least one magazine or book about food – and they make it so easy to lure me in by placing all these wonderful words & images right by the cash register…

Forget People, US Weekly, Cosmopolitan, Vogue…I will even forsake Vanity Fair in favour of a really appealing issue of Saveur, Cook’s Illustrated, or Bon Appetit.

But do I really need more recipes for ‘fresh summer salads’, chicken potpie or vegetarian lasagna?  My shelves are already overflowing with books and magazines all about food.  And that doesn’t even take into account the boxes of cookbooks in storage waiting until the next move when I will have more shelf space.

Then there’s the Food Network.  I know when the SO has been at the gym, where he watches it on the treadmill – I get a text about whether we should include some esoteric ingredient in the evening meal like “what can we do with clams?”… And I will happily wind down in an evening watching “Kitchen Nightmares”.

In “Cooked”, Michael Pollan’s latest book, he talks about the Cooking Paradox.  In North America, we are cooking less and buying more prepared meals every year; yet we are talking about cooking more – and watching cooking, and reading about cooking.   And there is an industry that feeds that…with what I call ‘food porn’ that provides us with some type of gratification that we seem to be seeking more and more.

I can’t explain the growth of the ‘food porn’ industry but I do know that I am an avid consumer…

It’s been a very long week: I could go to bed tonight with “50 Shades of Gray” or the latest issues of Bon Appetit and Saveur…I know which option I’m choosing.

And, c’mon, admit it, you all probably have your secret stash…

I’ll fess up – I love watching Iron Chef America and Top Chef Canada.

I watch “Kitchen Nightmares” on demand. I am usually too scared to tune into the Food Network directly as the vortex can suck me in and hours pass without knowing it…

Clams are good no matter what you do with them.

Completely agree…I lost my taste for mussels a few years back (just out of the blue) but still am a big clam fan.

      • fransiweinstein says:

Still like mussels but clams are much better. And more interesting. How’s your cold? This weather’s certainly not helping. Jeez!

      • katem5 says:

The cold is improving (thank goodness and thanks for asking) but definitely looking forward to an early night tucked in with my food porn 🙂

It’s the perfect day/night for it
